Speed Assistance System
Speed Assistance Systems (SAS) are intended to inform the driver of the speed limit and/or limit the vehicle’s speed to the maximum permitted speed. Latin NCAP accepts manually set speed limit systems; however, achieving higher ratings requires more intelligent versions that effectively communicate or limit the speed to the permitted maximum through the combined use of cameras and GPS. Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems use cameras — the same or similar to those used for AEB — to read speed limit signs, often combined with GPS localization where the speed limit at that location is known. The system then adjusts the vehicle’s maximum speed according to the speed detected on the sign and/or through GPS information, or a combination of both.
