Latin NCAP launches mobile app with new vehicle safety ratings
Santiago de Chile, November 28 2018
The New Car Assessment Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin NCAP, launched its mobile app aiming to provide to consumers easy access to its vehicle safety ratings and to offer independent information when buying a new car.
The presentation of the app was made in the framework of the announcement of new safety requirements for vehicles recently made by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications of the government of Chile, under the National Traffic Safety Commission of Chile (CONASET). The new requirements include the Electronic Stability Control standard for new models as of October 2021 and for all models as of October 2022. Read more information.
Since 2010, Latin NCAP has tested over 100 new car models sold throughout the region. In the last years, safety performance has been increasing in relevance by consumers when buying a new car for them or their family. Moreover, some car manufacturers use Latin NCAP’s test results as sale argument and to position themselves differentiated to their competitors.
The app is available for IOS and Android phones in three languages and it is free to download. Consumers will also receive notifications when new models are tested.
Luis Alberto Stueven, Executive Secretary of CONASET said:
"This application will allow people to have more information about the safety standards of their vehicles. This is very important for us as the National Traffic Safety Commission, because it will allow us to have greater certainty about the weak points that we must improve in terms of road safety. Our commitment is to make drivers more aware that safe driving can make the difference between life and death. Remember that during 2017 there were 94,879 road accidents in Chile, with a total of 1,483 deaths and 62,171 injuries of varying consideration in our country. We want to reduce the number of deaths and that is why we support this initiative”.
Alejandro Furas, Latin NCAP Secretary General said:
“Latin NCAP’s app offers an easy user experience, offering simplified vehicle safety information. We hope that consumers and car manufacturers will increasingly use and promote the app in order to raise vehicle safety awareness and help save lives in the region. We are very pleased to have the support of the Government of Chile in this initiative. It is a clear example of how governments can carry out simple actions with immediate positive impact on consumers. We hope that other governments in the region follow the example of Chile both in the way of vehicle safety regulations and in this type of actions”.
