Toro bursts onto the market with four stars for adult and child occupants

Latin NCAP’s second round of results for 2018 was released today with encouraging results to keep the expectations high with the recently launched Fiat Toro. In our latest testing, the Toro, achieved four stars for Adult and Child Occupant Protection.

Fiat Toro, the new light pick-up launched in 2017, produced in Brazil, achieved four stars for Adult Occupant Protection and four stars for Child Occupant Protection. The Toro offered good protection for the adults heads’ in the front and side impact protection, and adequate and marginal chest protection in front and side crash test in its most basic safety equipment of two frontal airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). This good performance added to the ESC standard equipment as well as its performance meeting Latin NCAP’s requirements assure the four stars for Adult Occupant Protection. The Toro offers ISOFIX anchorages as standard equipment which added to the protection offered during front and side crash tests for both child occupants and full Child Restraint System (CRS) installation score made the model to achieve four stars in Child Occupant Protection. Passenger’s airbag disabling possibility in case a rearward facing CRS needs to be installed in the front seat is a standard feature.

Latin NCAP also tested de 6 airbags version of the Toro in a pole impact scenario and it offers enough protection to meet Latin NCAP requirements in this test giving full protection to most body regions.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Latin NCAP said:

“It is encouraging to find more and more models in the market like the Toro showing a good safety performance in it most basic safety equipped versions. Fiat can and should bring these levels of safety performances to all its models range, especially to the most popular models. We would like to encourage Fiat to increase the basic safety equipment of the Toro in order to achieve five stars.

Latin NCAP demonstrated that testing models and publishing their results are the most powerful and efficient tools to improve Latin America’s market vehicle safety earlier and beyond any regional governmental regulation. Latin NCAP is calling for all governments in Latin America to urgently adopt the United Nations’ front and side impact crash test standards certification, ESC and Pedestrian protection standard, and in the meantime make Latin NCAP tests mandatory for all cars in the market. By doing this, all consumers will have clear information on the safety offered by the car that they plan to buy.”

“Consumer power is becoming more and more noticeable in the Latin American and Caribbean region, making vehicle manufacturers react and offer increasingly better safety models. The change is real but there is still more to do; consumers need the commitment of all manufacturers and also from governments in order to quickly save more lives in the region”.

The next round of Latin NCAP results will be released in May.
