Side impact structure comparison: Fiat New Palio vs Peugeot 208
08.12.2016

By evaluating both cars in its side impact test, Latin NCAP found structural differences between the two models.

Latin NCAP assessed the Fiat New Palio and the Peugeot 208 under the new 2016 protocol, which includes the side impact test, mandatory for all models as from this year. The Fiat New Palio and the Peugeot 208 share part of the most competitive segment, B and B+, in the Latin American. The New Palio used to be the best-selling car in the Brazilian market while the 208 brought to local consumers the expectation to have a global popular platform locally produced exactly like the original model.

Latin NCAP compared the side impact tests performed to the Peugeot 208 and the Fiat New Palio and at first sight it was clear that there was a higher intrusion in the passengers’ compartment in the 208 in comparison to the New Palio. The New Palio offers the side impact bars in the doors while the 208 does not. The New Palio shows that Fiat developed the model for better side impact protection.

Alejandro Furas, Latin NCAP General Secretary said:

“Unfortunately side impact protection is not mandatory today in Latin American countries with the exception of Ecuador, and only a few markets plan to make it mandatory in the near future. Side impacts present a high risk for occupants as there is little space in the side to absorb impact energy.

Latin NCAP calls on all governments in Latin America to make mandatory UN95 side impact protection regulation together with UN94 frontal crash test protection and ESC as soon as possible. UN95 side impact protection regulation has been mandatory in Europe for over 20 years ago and we believe Latin Americans shouldn’t wait any longer to get this minimum crash protection standard.”
