Upcoming Global NCAP Buyers Guide

Within the framework of the first Global NCAP Annual Meeting held in Malaysia on 23 and 24 May, the upcoming Global NCAP Buyers Guide was announced.

Following the Decade of Action for Road Safety, Global NCAP is developing a guide that will include major global regulations recommended to consumers. These recommendations are based on the existing regulations under the 1958 and 1998 agreements of the United Nations Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP29).

The 6 most important regulations are: ECE Reg. 14 Safety Belts Anchorages, ECE Reg. 16 Safety Belts and Restraint Systems, ECE Reg. 94 Protection of occupants against frontal collision, ECE Reg. 95 Protection of occupants against lateral collision, GTR 8 Electronic stability control systems, GTR 9 Pedestrian safety.

The first 4 rules or regulations are considered extremely important and recommended for immediate requirement. The last 2 regulations are expected to be met by the vast majority of new vehicles by 2020, worldwide.

Global NCAP will periodically review this list which will be included in the "Buyers Guide" for fleet managers and the general public, to be launched later this year. This guide will also recommend to NCAPS programs "Five Star" cars, in markets where NCAP Programmes are available. The Cars that meet the 6 major regulations detailed above, may fail to get NCAP 5 stars.

The front and side crash tests are the most important tool for the evaluation of passive safety used by both law and by consumer test programs (NCAPs).
